PaciBode

I think I have made it perfectly clear that I don't really have a clue what I am doing. So here goes, I need your advice. When do we nix the paci? What worked for your child? I am really hoping the consesus is by kindergarten because right now, that is the plan.

Hi Summer -

With our first kid, when she hit around 2yo and was still hooked we took a drastic step. We took scissors and clipped the ends off all of them. They were "broken" then, and she no longer wanted them. We just never replaced them.

With our current little one (10mo right now) we made a concious effort from early on that we were only going to give it to her when she went down for a nap or bedtime. That's worked pretty well. She's not allowed to just "have it" during the day. When she hits 12 or 15 months we'll probably just take it completely.

Hope this helps!

Paul

Wait until you are running out of them and just don't buy any more. Cold turkey, 2 nights of bad sleep, and you're done. He'll find another way to soothe himself. So worth it.

We tried the "broken" paci with P. At first it didn't phase her, so Josh snipped more of it off. Turns out he snipped too much and she could barely get her lips around it. She clung to it with the tips of her front teeth while pretending to be just as happy with that paci.

After that we just went cold turkey. It was a rough couple of nights/naps but after that she has been fine.

You mean we have to take it away??? I'm stalking your comments on this one cause my other two never even took a paci so this is new territory for me! He does pretty good during the day without it unless he's sleepy/sick/hurt...which make's him and me pretty dependent on it!!

Just do it- cold turkey. The younger the better. That's probably NOT what you wanted to hear, sorry.

Both of mine were around 12-15 months. When we ran out, we never bought more. They could talk better since there was no paci in there! Avery fussed a few times that night but was fine. Pretty sure Zane was the same. I just let them know crying wasn't going to bring it back. They are all lost but it will be okay. Do it over a weekend and that is all it should take!

when canton turned 2, we made him leave it in his bed. when he wanted it, he had to go lay down. he would do it a few times and decided it wasn't worth it. Then he got in trouble at nap time and i said if i have to come in here again, i am taking your passy. So, i had to. he never cried or asked about it again. Good luck, but wait till August;)

Carson was 3. We went to the dentist for the first time and I made the dentist tell him that it was time. We cut a slit in all of them (9!) and the first night he complained that it was broken but kept it in his mouth still. He told me we just need to buy more at the store. After about a week he just stopped asking for it. No tears, nothing. I'm not a fan of letting my kid cry if there is a way I can help them, so this worked for us. So, my opinion, WAIT!

Our doc told us to get rid of it at 16 months. Lily was 16 months, Addy was 12 months. She told us to pick where we needed it more (at first). Does he need it at nap MORE than bedtime?? If so, give it to him at nap only for a few weeks and then one day it's just gone. We don't talk about it, we don't say the word. If he has a word for it, act like you don't know what he's talking about. Our kids both did really well with that.

Our girls mainly chewed on them anyway, so we also bought fun new "chew toys" for them around the house! Worked!!

Good luck!

This is what we did with Macy and are actually going to do with Charlie this Thursday. I have been telling Charlie that Thursday is "Bye-Bye Paci Day". What we do is I keep remiding him that it is coming and act all excited about it and that he is going to be a big boy, yada yada.. Then on Thursday we will buy a couple balloons, make some cupcakes and then after dinner we tie the pacis to the balloons and then let charlie let them go outside and we go inside and eat the cupcakes. After that, there are no more pacis. Macy did great with it, she hesitated a little letting the balloons go, but never asked for her pacis again. I know it is incredibly dorky, but I wanted to do something at least somewhat fun for them and not just cut off the tip.

My daughter was 2 monthes shy of being 3 years old when we put all of the pacifiers in a large manilla envelope and "sent" them to the "pacifier fairy" and then the pacifier fairy brought a present ( our present was a kitten, but obviously you can do something that poops less). It was a rough couple of nights, but pretty soon they don't even miss it. Until they find one stuck down in the couch cushins 6 mos later and consider a relapse.

Hi, I'm a friend of Meredith Bramlett. Our daughter's paci finally broke and SHE threw it away because it "was boken." I have heard the balloon thing and also sending it down the river in a little paper boat. The Nanny on TV did the paci fairy. Of course, they have access to editing that we do not. Hope it goes okay for you. Denise

I don't believe in cookie-cutter solutions for toddlers, but here's what went down at our house...Both of mine were 2. Corben started biting holes in his when he was teething. He had to throw the holey ones in the trash. When they were gone, they were gone. He told us we could get more at Walmart. Smart kid. Overall, pretty painless. With sister, Betty at McD's asked for it one Saturday. Cianne, somewhat stunned, handed it over. Every time we see Betty at church, Cianne still tells her she wants her paci back!
